Where do We Flee?

John the Baptist began his public ministry with the stirring call to “flee from the wrath to come” (Luke 3:7).  And the question that we all must face is, “Where do we flee?”  “Where can we go?”  Thankfully, John gives us the answer: “I baptize you with water, but he who is mightier than I is coming, the strap of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie.  He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire” (Luke 3:16).  And John’s preaching is good news (v. 18)!  It is good news because the one about whom John spoke has come!  And of course, that one is the Lord Jesus Christ.  It is good news that Christ has come.  It is good news that he was filled with the Spirit; that he was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil (Luke 3:21-22; 4:1-13); that he overcame where the first Adam failed; and wonder of wonders, that he propitiated – or satisfied – the wrath of the Father on the cross!  Thus, when we flee to Christ, we are safe under his wings.  He bore the wrath of the Father that we deserve!  And in returning to our original question … “Where do we flee?”  The only place to flee is to Christ Jesus our Lord!!
