Polemical Theology

In our introduction to Genesis a few weeks ago in adult Sunday School we discussed the idea of Polemical Theology in the Bible.  That is to say – one of the things Moses was doing as he penned Genesis under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit – was leveling a polemic (sustained argument) against the surrounding pagan, polytheistic cultures.  For example, why did the serpent that was Moses’ staff devour the serpents of the Egyptian magicians?  What is going on in the ten plagues?  The idea of polemical theology helps us with these questions and many more.  My Old Testament professor at RTS-C, Dr. John Currid, has a new book in which he unpacks the Polemical Theology in the OT.  Check it out here: http://thegospelcoalition.org/blogs/justintaylor/2013/08/21/what-is-the-relationship-between-the-writings-of-the-old-testament-and-other-ancient-near-eastern-literature/.
